Canon raises the stakes for professional photography with its EF 28-300mm USM ultra-high magnification zoom lens with image stabilization. This handy, compact zoom lens offers versatility, easy subject selection, and the highest optical performance in its class. The 11x zoom range covering everything from wide-angle to telephoto, and you can focus in on subjects as close as 2.3 feet. A powerful ring-type USM drive provides silent. Featuring a dust- and moisture-proof "white lens," it is designed to appeal to professional EOS photographers looking to reduce lens changes and the number of lenses they need to carry.
Image Stabilization
The lens incorporates Canon's Image Stabilization (IS) technology, compensating for approximately three stops without any perceptible increase in image blur when shooting static subjects or panning. This increases the range of circumstances in which hand-held photography is possible, limiting the need to carry a tripod.
Fast Auto-Focus
The inner focusing ring-type ultrasonic motor (USM) converts ultrasonic vibrational energy into rotational force to deliver high-speed, high-precision, super efficient and virtually noiseless auto focusing, with good holding torque for rapid response, accurate stopping. Full-time manual override without damage to the autofocus mechanism is featured. Minimum focusing distance is just 0.7m throughout the entire zoom range.
Ready for Digital Photography
The lens shape and coatings have been optimized to suppress ghosting and flaring, making this lens ideal for use with digital cameras that are more susceptible to reflections off the recording media than are film cameras.
Precision Optics
This lens features 22 elements in 16 groups for low distortion, high corner-to-corner resolution throughout the entire zoom range. As with all EF lenses, aperture is controlled with an EMD (electromagnetic diaphragm) for fast, quiet, highly precise control and incorporates a circular aperture diaphragm for beautifully pleasing background blur, from full aperture to two stops down.
The use of 3 Ultra-low Dispersion (UD) glass elements effectively curtails the residual chromatic aberrations that can plague lesser quality long lenses, while aspherical elements correct various kinds of aberration that occur during zooming to give the lens the unsurpassed clarity and resolving power that are the hallmark of professional L-series lenses.
Environmental protection
The EF 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6L IS USM features a rugged dust-proof and drip-proof construction, designed for professional photographers working in harsh environments under a wide range of operating temperatures and humidities.

Hands down, this lens is THE most versatile one in Canon's lineup. There is absolutely nothing like taking one moment to get a wide shot at 28mm of, say, a ballroom, then, in the next 5 or so seconds, zoom in and get the speaker at the podium at 300mm, standing where you are.... You really can't do that with many other lenses! Although it is an "old" design (I believe it came out in 2006?), it is tried and true. The image quality is at magazine level (in my opinion), and it is especially useful at weddings, events, and even portraits. The latter can be useful further in its range (say, from 85-300mm), where you can still achieve strong bokeh effect even at 5.6, IF the subject is at least 15' away from you.... It is especially strong outside, during the day; however, inside, it is highly recommended that you use flashes with it....
The biggest difference between the L-series and consumer level lenses is, quite simply, the image quality. The shots simply come out SO much better with an L-series lens. The images from this lens are tack sharp, even at lower shutter speeds (i.e. at a/60th or lower handheld, because of its Image Stabilization!). Although I seriously looked into mirrorless technology, I stuck with a professional-level DSLR camera, this lens, and another L-series lens, and, for the first time ever, I don't have to worry about having to take multiple shots in order to make sure I capture a clear one (even with the use of flashes).
It is not the sharpest lens in Canon's lineup while using natural light, compared with their prime lenses, nor is it light in weight (it is heavy!), but its strength is its versatility. Sharpness is very, very strong when using flashes with it.... Secondly, to take full advantage of its capabilities all day, my advice would be to not to have a neck strap on your camera when using it. Instead, place a harness on your camera body so the weight of it can be evenly distributed across your back and shoulders. Trust me, I KNOW what the former feeling was like in having a neck strap on the camera body, carrying this baby around all day for a wedding; the result was my back was hurting after the event....
All in all: If you can overcome the lens's heaviness, along with having the mindset of using its full zoom range whenever you use it, you will be able to capture AWESOME moments! However, don't take it everywhere with you!! Because of its sheer size, it definitely attracts people to look at you while you are using it, almost like a Bentley that drives up (LOL).... Other than that, it is a GREAT lens, tried and true, and reliable!

I'm glad that I bought it through Amazon, since there was zero hassle about returning the lens. For the record, I did just order another used lens from a different source - hopefully this one will work correctly. In the past, I have had pretty great experience with buying used camera equipment.
First the Pros:
1. Once you get used to the push-pull zoom, focusing and zooming onto any object, at any distance becomes a snap.
2. Much has been said of the tightening ring, in my experience it has been a life-saver. With the same hand using the zoom push/pull just a flick of finger can increase or decrease the friction and one can adjust how quickly or slowly zoom push pull works.
3. The picture quality is amazing at least on my camera (50D) I did not notice much difference in picture quality between this and the 70-200mm lenses. Maybe it works differently for full-frame cameras.
4. I was quite skeptical about distortions as noted in some of the reviews. But in actual experience, Photoshop always had the correction data since both the 50D and this lens are supported. Its just a matter of loading up the RAW and your PS filters can automatically apply the respective correction for the FL you have the picture taken at.
5. One lens, huge range. One doesn't realize how easy this lens makes it until you've been using it for a while and then one day decide to go back to other lenses.
6. Beautiful pictures, bokeh as well, HDR shots, at least on 50D, there's not a single flaw I could find.
7. The lens is heavy; at least for me it means more stability. Combined with the IS on the lens I can be sure, my hand held shots will rarely have a shake. It may be a matter of personal preference but I did not find the lens to be heavier than two lenses put together to get the same range.
8. For a 3.5, the lens is surprisingly quick(unless in low-light scenarios). I've rarely missed a moment because of the lens. Of course, if you've not used the lens for a while or do not use the fl selector, you could cause the lens to hunt (happened rarely to me but my friends definitely complained about it).
Cons:
1. True, the aperture falls very quickly somewhere after the 50mm range but once you get a hang of how quickly and where, its not much of an issue.
2. In low light conditions, this lens does turn out very slow. Expect grainy, Ghost or long hunting times in the dark. I typically switch to manual focus and manual settings to correct these issues.
3. Obviously, using this lens means you wouldn't be hanging the camera or the lens around your neck. It goes in the backpack!
All in all, I think this is a great lens. It does not replace the 70-200mm plus other lenses to get the same range. It compliments them when you cannot carry multiple lenses. Feel free to look at the images taken by this lens on my Flickr page [...]
