I used it during the very cold and snowy winter (-10 C ~-15C) for outdoor wild animal photos. The gimbal worked flawlessly smooth. Though it is a bit on the heavier side but it is extremely robust.
The only thing missing from this gimbal is the level bubble, otherwise it would be perfect.
The fit and finish is OK, but I would expect a little better. I had some significant play develop in the head and finally had to remove the interior plate of the central knob to tighten down a nut. This has since solved that play. Maybe a little to be desired in the QC department. The rotation of the central knob is a little wonky - not made with the precision I would expect and the degree of friction adjustments in both panning/fluid orientations is not nearly as controllable as I would like, but usable. Finally, the plate for holding the lens foot is adequate - but with a cheaper feel than the excellent plates I've used with companies like Wimberly, Kirk and RRS.
For the money and weight, I don't know of a better fluid head that can properly handle a 400-600mm lens in this way. You would have to step up and pay well into the thousands of dollars to get something better (e.g. something in the professional video world).
I'm not a huge fan of how Gitzo does business recently, being robbed of $300 in declined mailed-in rebates. Be warned! Do not let mail-in rebates affect your buying decisions for any of the brands owned by the Vitec Group (Gitzo, Manfrotto, etc.). It seems like they will do anything they can not to payout on these "rebates". I own and use three Gitzo tripods and this head, but will never let a rebate affect my decisions again.
