Good EDC, could be better

Good EDC, could be better
I've had my T4 for a week now and put it through its paces at work and around the house and yard, so I have some thoughts. The T4 is a solid EDC option with some good features and a few areas that could really use some improvement.Obviously, this is basically a Swiss Army Knife (SAK) replacement, not a replacement for multitools with pliers like the Wave or Surge. So if you need pliers, clearly you should be looking at the P2 or P4 and this isn't for you. The advantage the T4 has over the P2/P4 is that it's smaller and lighter, but compared to a SAK like the Super Tinker, this T4 is pretty bulky. Boxy and thick are the two adjectives that come to mind. And I think the comparison to the SAK Super Tinker is fair because the features are pretty close: knife, screwdrivers, scissors, awl, tweezers, etc. Having said that, the T4 has substantially beefier tools. For instance, the T4's large flat screwdriver is a hefty 1/8" thick and you feel confident when aggressively using it as a pry bar. The downside is the T4 doesn't "disappear in your pocket". You know you have it. I cannot overstate how thick the T4 is. It's worse than you think because the raw measurements don't really convey how thick it feels. The boxy square corners make this feel thicker than a SAK of the same thickness. Luckily, it also comes with the pocket clip, which I find immensely beneficial towards mitigating the bulk. (As a side note, the clip is an add-on option for the T2.) So overall weight and size impressions: it is easier than carrying a Wave at the cost of less functionality (i.e. pliers, saw, etc.), but possibly more inconvenient than a SAK with the advantage of the T4's more robust tools. In my experience so far, the biggest selling point the T4 offers is one-hand use. I can open every tool with one hand, from the scissors to the tweezers. This is huge when you're in middle of a project. For example, I was tying an apple tree to a stake last night, holding the twine and tree in place with one hand and opening the scissors with the other to cut the twine to length. That's what EDC is all about, having the tool you need when you need it.The one-handed opening is flawless... with the exception of my most-used implement: the knife is hard to open. I get why it is, I mean, you don't want the knife popping open in your pocket, but still, it is way harder than it ought to be. I've only had it a week, so maybe it will break in, but as is, this thing is clumsy. I think it could have used a thumb stud or just less spring force holding it closed. I don't always get the knife open on the first try. If you're used to spring assist knives, the T4 knife will really feel like a step backwards. There's no sugar coating it, this is a huge disappointment for me. But in the end, I can open zero tools on my Super Tinker with one hand, so the advantage still goes to the T4 and I'll take what I can get.So let's talk about some of the specific tools. I already said the large flat screwdriver is gloriously thick, but the width of the head is curiously small. I would have expected a full 1/4" wide head, but the "package cutter" feature steals some of that material leaving an oddly skinny "large" screwdriver. In fact, the medium flat screwdriver head is too skinny as well. The thickness is the size that would fit nicely in an outlet cover, but the width is far too small. It just seems like odd sizes. The smallest of the three flat screwdrivers is just about perfect and can actually tighten the screws on my glasses. The knife blade itself (other than hard opening) functions really well and comes razor sharp. It has an aggressive curve in the blade that will probably be a pain to sharpen, but it doesn't hurt performance. Lefties, beware though. The knife is all the way to the bottom of the thick handle when you hold it right-handed, which works well for me, but it might be awkward for a lefty if you're trying to cut close to a surface. The file is both a hit and a miss. The double-cut side works extremely well, although it is way too short. The miss is the single-cut side. I really wish they had put a diamond-coated file on this side like the Wave. It would be great to be able to touch up a blade in a pinch or just smooth something down without filing the crap out of it.The awl is pretty nice, although when you open it one-handed you are pushing on the sharpened side, which is a bit precarious. The scissors seem to work pretty well too. I'd say they are better than the SAK scissors. Speaking of which, the tweezers are serviceable and I'd choose them over the SAK tweezers any day.I don't think the pocket clip counts as a "tool", but it's pretty great. It's deep carry and robust. It's far better than the Wave's clip, in my opinion. I always have issues getting the Wave's clip to open up to slip over my jeans pocket, but the T4 clip has a nice flared end that makes clipping it a breeze. I've also recently had the Wave clip accidentally come off, but the T4's is securely screwed to the scale. No complaints here. The Phillips head driver is one of the 1/8" thick tools and looks robust, but the actual performance is dismal. You really need to push in towards the screw to avoid stripping. The head geometry must be weird because I have a hard time applying moderate torque without slipping out of the screw as I seat it. I've tried maybe a dozen screw types, and some are better than others. The bigger sin is there's damage on the bit head already. My third screw made permanent dents on the driver head using fairly light torque. Really, Leatherman? You can do better than this.Which brings me to the biggest missed opportunity for the T4: I can't believe they didn't shoehorn the exchangeable bit holder into this thing. It's already like 2-inches thick, why not throw it in? Then I don't care if I damage the bits. I can swap them out. It feels like I'm using a Wingman and not a Wave... and that is not a compliment. (Maybe that's a bad analogy, but my Wingman feels cheap compared to my Wave or Style or Squirts.)Oh, speaking of tools, did I mention everything locks? Because everything locks and it's great. This is a nice bonus, and it works very well. It can be a little awkward to unlock certain tools with one hand, but it is a pretty good system all said and done. This is another clear win over my SAKs.My only other ding on the T4 is the plastic spacers. I believe the sales literature says it's "glass-filled nylon"? Cool. But it still makes the tool feel a little cheap. The traditional pliers-based tools feel solid and robust with all the spectacular steel on display. For me, the plastic detracts from the aesthetics no matter how you slice it. It also makes it look unnecessarily thick because you immediately think, "just take out all the plastic and you can make this half as thick!" Of course, that's probably nonsense. As far as overall build quality goes, other than the shoddy Phillips driver (did they get a bad batch with a poor heat treat??), the build quality is fantastic. There is absolutely ZERO play in any of the tools. They are 100% rock solid locked in place with no play in any direction. It feels like a high quality tool. (...with the exception of that awful Phillips head. I can't say enough bad things about it.)Okay, I had a lot of complaints, so what's my overall opinion? Am I going to carry it? Definitely... sometimes. Sometimes I don't need a full multitool with pliers and the kitchen sink. Sometimes I just want a tool that will do the most common tasks. What I found this week is that the pocket clip and one-handed opening put the T4's tools in my hand and ready for use quicker and easier than a SAK. I don't think I understood the convenience until I experienced it in real world situations.Having said that, the T4 seems to be all about compromises. It isn't as full-featured as something like a Wave. I don't have a saw, bit changer, decent size file, or pliers, but hey, it's easier to carry and I might not need that stuff. On the other hand it isn't exactly light or thin either. It feels like a brick compared to a SAK, but I get some beefy tools and the tools open with one hand. All in all, that's a trade-off I'll make in many EDC situations. I'm glad the T4 is an option. Other days, I'll gladly grab my Wave. (Heck, some days I'll just have my Executive SAK on my keychain.) I don't know if I'd say the T4 is easy to recommend at $60. It feels like a $50 tool, and an instant-buy at $40. I'm glad I have it, but I don't feel like the value is there yet. If I had waited for a sale, I would probably feel better about it. And if the next iteration of these T* tools addresses even a couple of my issues with thickness, lack of bit holder, screwdriver deficiencies, one-handed knife opening, lack of diamond file, or price... it will probably be my favorite EDC of all time.On a semi-related note, after using this tool, there is no way in the world I will buy a P4 for $140 without an exchangeable bit driver as one of the tools. If my initial use is any indication, I can predict this Phillips head will be largely destroyed in a year or less. It looks like the P4 uses the same design, and there is no way I'm paying $140 for that. Carrying the T4 also underscored how much I missed the full size diamond file in the Wave, which is something the P4 does not have. I think I'm happy with the Wave and T4 combo for now and I have no desire for the P4 until it improves the tools or lowers the price drastically. So there's my review. In a nutshell, the T4 is a useful EDC option with some hit-and-miss tools, but its one-handed use overcomes a boatload of flaws. But grab one on sale.

4.0 out of 5 stars Compromises to accept
Reviewed in the United States on November 29, 2022
I bought this to compliment a 20 year old Leatherman supertool 200 which I have in its leather case on my belt at all times around the house.
On the T4: The Good:
-"Fairly" easy to open all tools with the RIGHT hand.
-Not as bulky as many claim. Thinner by ~3mm than my 24 yr old Swiss army Deluxe Tinker.
-Pocket clip allows it to be almost completely concealed in the pocket and is easy enough to slide into thinner pocket edge folds than a jeans pocket.
-All tools very sturdy and material appears to be corrosion resistant.
-Scissors is sharp enough to cut cloth.. My Leatherman micra scissors has lost its edge for that and I can't seem to sharpen it enough to where it would cut cloth. Note - If you cut paper / cardboard with a scissors, it dulls the blade and makes it very difficult to cut cloth.
-There is a small hole on the branding side to attach a key ring/lanyard - which I intend to utilize. ;)
The Not so Good:
-Blade is short. Shorter by ~14mm than the knife on the ST200. Probably too short for use in the kitchen. Time will tell if it's length is adequate for other outdoor uses.
-I wished the blade had a serated portion for "sawing" through tougher items.
-The pocket clip cannot be moved to the opposite side. I keep it in my right pocket and when I pull it out, I have to flip it over to open the knife. It would've been great to be able to pull it out my pocket and have the right orientation one time to access / open the knife with my right hand.
-It does take some force to open the blade with my right thumb using one hand and as a result my thumb tip is slightly sore. This shouldn't be a problem if you don't need to open and close the knife often. Or over time it may become looser. I added a small drop of machine oil to help a bit as well.
-If closing the blade with one hand, be careful of your finger placement as, depending on how much force you apply on the back of the blade to swing it shut - it can get your other fingers if they're in the way!

All in all it should serve the need - but I wish it had a bit longer and serated blade, and that the clip could be placed on either side (as in the K4). Will see how it goes in the coming months .. It was a toss up between this and the K4X but the extra $30 was a bit much more and based on comments, way bulkier in the pocket.
