Peak Design Launches New Outdoor Line of Camera Bags

Peak Design’s new range of camera bags for outdoor photographers has launched today. The Outdoor Line consists of the new Outdoor Backpack in two sizes, and the Outdoor Sling in two sizes. The company says it developed the new line of bags “to address issues like poor fit, overly-bulky harness systems, limited access, and over-engineered ‘technically baroque’ designs” seen in other outdoor bags.

The Peak Design Outdoor Line was launched on Kickstarter and funded within a few minutes. The new bags’ prices on Kickstarter are between 20% and 25% cheaper than retail prices. Peak Design says Kickstarter backers should receive their bags in January 2025.

Key Features and Specifications

Outdoor Sling 2L

The Outdoor Sling 2L launches in three colors.

The smaller of the two Outdoor Slings has a volume of two litres. It’s technically not a camera bag as it is too small to accomodate any of Peak Design’s padded camera cubes. However, it still deserves a mention as it clips neatly to the chest straps of the Outdoor Backpacks to act as a quick-access pouch.

Outdoor Sling 7L

The Outdoor Sling 7L launches in three colors.

The Outdoor Sling 7L has an additional zippered front pocket, a stabilizer strap, and is compatible with Peak Design’s padded XS Camera Cube. This zippered cube will hold a small drone, a compact camera on an APS-C sized camera with a couple of small lenses. Like the Outdoor Sling 2L, the 7L sling can also be attached to the front of the Outdoor Backpack’s harness, giving you quick access to a camera without need to remove the pack.

Outdoor Backpack 25L

The Outdoor Backpack 25L flexes between 20L and 25L using the bag’s top cinch strap. It’s largest enough to hold up to the SMedium (that’s not a typo, it’s what PD calls their Small/Medium camera cube) Camera Cube. Notably, while the 45L pack comes with a hip belt, the 25L does not, though it is an optional purchase.

Outdoor Backpack 45L

The largest backpack is the Outdoor Backpack 45L. This bag holds up to the large size of padded Camera Cube, allowing you to use it with bigger lenses like a 200-600mm zoom. It’s worth noting that the 45L volume is a maximum size. Peak Design says that the cinch mechanism on the top of the bag compresses it down to around 34.5L when you aren’t carrying a full load. So it’s best to think of this bag as a 34-45L bag.

Press Release

Peak Design Redefines Adventure Carry with New Outdoor Line
Innovations in comfort and access highlight modular outdoor bags built for any adventure

San Francisco, CA (September 3, 2024) – Peak Design, the global leader in carry solutions and crowdfunding, proudly announces its most anticipated soft-goods product launch to date: The Peak Design Outdoor Line. Representing the pinnacle of Peak Design’s soft-goods innovation, the Outdoor Line offers customizable modular organization, superior comfort for every body type, and effortless access to gear for outdoor enthusiasts and adventure photographers alike.

Peak Design has straddled the outdoor and photography industries for over a decade. Having experienced repeated shortcomings with other outdoor bags on the market, Peak developed the Outdoor Line to address issues like poor fit, overly-bulky harness systems, limited access, and over-engineered ‘technically baroque’ designs.

The line consists of 2 backpacks, 2 slings, and an ecosystem of Packing Tools for clothes, gear, and photography equipment. The Outdoor Backpack—available in 45L and 25L sizes—is differentiated by its unique harness system that uses low-profile, hyper-adjustable shoulder and waist straps to provide superior comfort and fit with significantly less bulk. Shoulder straps inspired by running vests distribute weight over a greater surface area while also providing convenient storage and dual camera-carry attachment points. Users are treated to 2 different forms of access: a quick-opening top hatch (called Ultra Cinch™) and a giant rear access panel for easy packing and total visibility. The backpack provides seemingly endless capacity for external storage via its versatile Cord Hook™ carry system and a network of stretchy Flex Pockets™ that can hold water bottles, tripods, jackets, and more.

Complimenting the Outdoor Backpack is the Peak Design Outdoor Sling, available in 7L and 2L sizes. The Outdoor Sling features a padded, removable strap with custom clasp and quick-adjustment hardware allowing it to quickly convert from a cross-body bag to a waist bag. The 7L model features external carry Gear Loops and can accommodate a Peak Design X-Small Camera Cube to instantly become a camera bag. Both Outdoor Slings can be mounted to the shoulder straps of the Outdoor Backpacks to provide convenient chest-mounted storage while on the trail.

All of Peak Design’s new bags are designed to seamlessly integrate with their Camera Cubes (updated in late 2023) and Ultralight Packing Cubes (launched in June 2024), which enable users to quickly customize their pack-outs for any combination of gear. Camera Cubes are available in 5 sizes to accommodate any creative kit, from mirrorless cameras and drones all the way to full-blown professional photography kits. All bags in the Outdoor Line feature Peak’s new PFAS-free 100% recycled weatherproof Terra Shell™ exterior fabric, proprietary abrasion-resistant Ultra Zips™, and UHMWPE (ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene) cording that is highly slash resistant.

“Our very first product—Capture—was a clip that let you carry your camera on your backpack strap while hiking,” said Peter Dering, Peak Design Founder and CEO. “Since then, Peak Design has been synonymous with ‘outdoor photography.’ Yet we still haven’t created true outdoor bags…until now. The Outdoor Line is not only the culmination of everything we’ve learned as bag designers, it’s also a giant nod to our most loyal and longest-tenured customers.”
From September 3 through October 15, 2024, Peak Design’s Outdoor Line will be available to preorder on Kickstarter (peakdesign.com/ks) for 20-25% off MSRP (MSRP $59.95 – $329.95, depending on the item). Products are expected to ship to Kickstarter backers in January 2025, and become available on peakdesign.com, Amazon, and retailers worldwide in late November 2024.
