I recently installed OWC’s Dock Ejector 2 application. This helper software offers a safe method for ejecting all external drives from your computer before unplugging a hub or dock. During installation, you are presented with the usual option that asks whether you want to “Help improve OWC Dock Ejector.” It says, “Sends anonymous usage statistics to OWC. No personal information will be collected.” I disabled this option during installation.
Unfortunately, when the installation was complete, a quick look in the preferences menu for Dock Ejector 2 showed the option was turned ON. My wish to be left out of any tracking or data sending, anonymous or not, was being completely ignored. I installed the software on a second computer to ensure I wasn’t making a mistake and saw the same problem. Despite deselecting the option to send usage data to OWC, the option was again turned ON in the preferences after installation.
Given that this relatively simple piece of software only has two options in the preferences menu, it’s incredibly troubling to see one of them behaving this way. The implication is that minimal testing was done on this software. My installations were on two different operating systems: Sequoia and Sonoma. Apple’s two most recent systems. In a world where consumers are becoming increasingly savvy about how their data is collected and used, ignoring such an opt-out request paints a poor picture.
I have reached out to OWC for a comment and will let you know when I have it. In the meantime, I had to post this immediately since the software was already freely available on its website. Additionally, my installation on a Mac running Sonoma resulted in an immediate kernel panic and forced restart. This is the opposite of a safe way to unmount external drives, and, again, it makes me question the amount of serious testing this application went through before release. I love OWC hardware, but this software is release is disappointing.
Updates and Bug Fix

UPDATE 1: Feb 4th 2025 – Bug confirmed by OWC software developer. Patch due “soon.”
UPDATE 2: Feb 5th 2025 – Version 2.0.1 was pushed out on February 5th. Kudos to OWC for fixing the issue so quickly after I reported it. If you installed Dock Ejector before Feb 5th 2025, you should check the preferences menu to ensure that your desired settings are reflected.
