Yesterday, Sony launched the world’s lightest 300mm f/2.8 lens and the world’s first full-frame camera with a global shutter, the a9 III. Both will retail for $5,999 and be available in Spring 2024 (B&H lists Feb 23, 2024).
Sony photographers have waited for an FE 300mm f/2.8 for nearly ten years, meaning this lens will be in high demand. While nobody was waiting for a global shutter full-frame camera that shoots 120fps because everyone thought such technology was many years away, now that it’s here, the a9 III will undoubtedly be in just as short supply as the 300mm. If not more so, with 2024 being an Olympic year.
In short, a pre-order for either item is the only smart choice. You can always cancel it later if you change your mind, and there is plenty of time to see some reviews and form your opinion before it ships. Just ensure you get in line if you want to stand any chance of getting these products when they first hit store shelves. I placed my pre-orders for both!
