Since publishing a piece about my decision to move from Canon to Sony, I have fielded many questions. A couple of common themes and ideas have arisen that I want to address in this follow-up article.
Tamron’s recent lightweight E-Mount lenses have been impressing reviewers and buyers for the past 18 months, but I think they are about to be eclipsed by this new lens.
After 15 years shooting with Canon professionally, I sold my Canon DSLR kit and switched to the Sony mirrorless system. Here’s why…
Canon announced the development of the EOS-1D X Mark III, their flagship professional DSLR. In this post I’ll examine all the details of the new features, and explain my wishes for those specifications that we don’t yet know.
When Sony recently announced the a9 II professional mirrorless camera, the internet exploded with disappointment and general negativity. I just had to respond…
As consumers, we are entering a period of radical change in the photography industry with the introduction of so many new full-frame mirrorless cameras and lenses. Sony had the place to themselves for a while, but with Nikon and Canon throwing their hats in the ring over the past couple of months, it’s clear that we are about to enter a mirrorless battle royale. At Photokina 2018, more big news as the L-Mount Alliance was announced between Leica, Sigma and Panasonic. This will see both Panasonic and Sigma releasing new full-frame mirrorless cameras in 2019, both using Leica’s L-Mount. Users …
We know photography is a waiting game. Sometimes you strike it lucky and Mother Nature rewards your efforts with incredible, dramatic sunrise or sunset light. Two weeks ago I drove 3000km to photograph a frozen lake, with some specific images in mind for a client. By the time I got to the lake, it had snowed and the glassy ice that I was looking for …
UPDATE: At Photokina 2018, Phase One announced that it would now support the RAW files from the Fuji medium format system. I’m super excited about this because this is a much more forward thinking attitude, and it also shows that Phase One are listening to consumers. I know many people were pretty pissed at me for writing this original article, but I’m glad that I did. I wasn’t the only one that spoke up about this, and collectively I do think we made a difference in this instance. Thank you Phase One!! I now look forward to getting my hands …
When it comes to protecting my huge archive of digital images I take absolutely no chances. My archive is stored on a Drobo which gives me some redundancy from drive failure. That Drobo is mirrored to a second Drobo which also has redundancy from drive failure, and then another copy of the same archive is stored off site on another Drobo. To lose my image archive I would basically need to have six simultaneous hard drive failures across two distinct geographic locations. Even then it would only take out the full archive which would leave me with copies of all …
