Whatever Happened to Mirrorless Miniaturization?

As consumers, we are entering a period of radical change in the photography industry with the introduction of so many new full-frame mirrorless cameras and lenses. Sony had the place to themselves for a while, but with Nikon and Canon throwing their hats in the ring over the past couple of months, it’s clear that we are about to enter a mirrorless battle royale. At Photokina 2018, more big news as the L-Mount Alliance was announced between Leica, Sigma and Panasonic. This will see both Panasonic and Sigma releasing new full-frame mirrorless cameras in 2019, both using Leica’s L-Mount. Users …

How I Get out of a Funk from Failed Photo Missions

We know photography is a waiting game. Sometimes you strike it lucky and Mother Nature rewards your efforts with incredible, dramatic sunrise or sunset light. Other times it can seem like you’re fighting a losing battle and things just don’t seem to ever pan out how you want them to. In recent weeks I’ve had a run of bad luck. Two weeks ago I drove 3000km to photograph a frozen lake, with some specific images in mind for a client. By the time I got to the lake, it had snowed and the glassy ice that I was looking for …

Think Twice Before Buying Capture One Pro 11

UPDATE: At Photokina 2018, Phase One announced that it would now support the RAW files from the Fuji medium format system. I’m super excited about this because this is a much more forward thinking attitude, and it also shows that Phase One are listening to consumers. I know many people were pretty pissed at me for writing this original article, but I’m glad that I did. I wasn’t the only one that spoke up about this, and collectively I do think we made a difference in this instance. Thank you Phase One!! I now look forward to getting my hands …

The Mindset That’s Costing People Their Images: Digital Photography is NOT Free!!

When it comes to protecting my huge archive of digital images I take absolutely no chances. My archive is stored on a Drobo which gives me some redundancy from drive failure. That Drobo is mirrored to a second Drobo which also has redundancy from drive failure, and then another copy of the same archive is stored off site on another Drobo. To lose my image archive I would basically need to have six simultaneous hard drive failures across two distinct geographic locations. Even then it would only take out the full archive which would leave me with copies of all …

Canon Vs. Nikon – Here’s How to Make Your Choice!

The Canon Vs. Nikon debate has raged for decades and whilst you could probably argue that it has now become Canon Vs. Nikon Vs. Sony, I don’t think I’m quite ready to tackle that broader argument. However, this week I have finally decided to write something about the longer standing traditional match up because I’ve finally reached some sort of zen-like clarity about it. I’m a Canon user myself and I have been all my career, but to put Nikon users at ease that this isn’t going to be an unfair fight, I’ll preface this by saying that Canon’s recent …
