Mountain Smith Kit Cube Review

Mountainsmith collaborated with adventure photographer Chris Burkhard to create a photography backpack called the Tanuck 40, and a waist pack called the Tanack 10 (no, that’s not a typo – Tanuck/Tanack). Stay tuned for a full review of the smaller Tanack very soon. These bags are sold without any kind of camera protection in them, but there is a line of camera inserts designed for the bags, called TAN Kit Cubes (Tough As Nails). The Mountainsmith TAN Kit Cubes are available in three different sizes, and in this quick review we’ll be taking a look at the small and medium …

My Photo Backup Routine – Early 2018

I started this particular series of posts back in 2015 by detailing my photography backup routine and outlining some of the basic strategies for a safe and redundant backup system. If you’re uncertain about the basics, you should start with that post first and then work through the full series which you can find here. I write this series because I want to draw attention to the importance of backing up your photos. Once again, last month one of my friends had a hard drive failure and lost most of the photos she had taken in 2017 because she didn’t take basic …

Peak Design Capture V3 Review

Just before the public launch of the Capture V3 I polled my social media followers to see how many people were using one of the existing models, and I was staggered to see how many people already owned a Capture, or knew exactly what the product was. I knew these were quite popular products, but I hadn’t appreciated how widespread their usage had become – at least amongst the kind of outdoorsy folks that generally tend to follow my work on social channels. For those that haven’t come across the product before, the Capture is a quick-release camera carrying device …

REVIEW: Peak Design Slide and Slide Lite Camera Straps (2017 Update)

The Slide and Slide Lite camera straps has been around for a few years, but these updated versions were launched as part of a highly successful Kickstarter campaign at the end of 2017, along with the launch of the Capture Clip V3. Peak Design Strap Lineup Overview Peak Design’s camera strap lineup consists of three different straps – in ascending order of size: Leash, Slide Lite, and Slide. Whilst the Leash is the smallest strap, this doesn’t mean it’s only for small cameras. In fact I often use a Leash with big pro DSLRs simply because I value the incredibly …

How to Correctly Open RAW Files in Luminar from Lightroom Classic

Another quick Luminar tutorial for you guys today, and this time we’re looking at how to open RAW files. Just like Lightroom, Luminar is a fully fledged RAW photo editor but unless you open the RAW files directly into Luminar from your file browser, it can be a little confusing. If you don’t do things quite right you might end up editing a converted TIFF of your image, instead of the original RAW file. This would definitely degrade the final image quality and you wouldn’t be pulling all of the available dynamic range out of the RAW file. Luminar RAW …

Think Twice Before Buying Capture One Pro 11

UPDATE: At Photokina 2018, Phase One announced that it would now support the RAW files from the Fuji medium format system. I’m super excited about this because this is a much more forward thinking attitude, and it also shows that Phase One are listening to consumers. I know many people were pretty pissed at me for writing this original article, but I’m glad that I did. I wasn’t the only one that spoke up about this, and collectively I do think we made a difference in this instance. Thank you Phase One!! I now look forward to getting my hands …
