How to Set up Double Back Button AF on Canon Cameras to Get Both Servo and One-Shot Af

Camera Compatibility At the time of writing this, the following tutorial applies to the Canon 7D Mark II, the Canon 5D Mark IV and the 1D X Mark II. It’s quite likely that it works on the 1D X as well, and will almost certainly work with future versions of these cameras. 7D Mark III, 5D Mark V and 1D X Mark III etc. If you have managed to get this working on other cameras, please leave a comment at the bottom so that I can update this tutorial. Thanks 🙂 Confirmed: Canon 80D cannot do double back button AF. …

Using a Trail Camera to Research Wildlife Photography Locations

Above: A lynx captured at night with my first trail camera, in the Yukon Wildlife photography can be a waiting game, but one trick that you can use to elevate your odds is researching your locations using relatively low cost trail cameras. A trail camera is a small, remotely triggered camera that can either be set to take photos or video when it senses movement. All modern trail cameras also have the ability to use infra red lights at nighttime, and many of them get far better results than you might be expecting for something that only costs between $100 …

Photographers, You Need to Make Sure Your Website Is Using HTTPS/SSL by July!

This topic came to mind as it is something I’ve been dealing with myself at the moment, so I wanted to pass it on to all of you as well. A Google security blog post announced that in July 2018, Google will begin marking all websites that are not encrypted with SSL as “not secure” in the Chrome browser, which currently accounts for about 60% of all web browser usage. 3 Big Reasons You Should Be Using an L-Plate on Your Camera

An L-plate (sometimes called an L-bracket) is an accessory that stays permanently attached to your camera and allows you to clamp it to the ball head on your tripod. When I purchased my first L-plate about a decade ago, it was one of those “why the heck didn’t I do this before!!” moments, and since then I’ve had one on every camera I own. When people see me using it, or when I post photos of my camera setup on social media, I often get questions from people asking about “the funny bracket thing”. If you want to delve really …

My Photo Backup Routine – Early 2018

If you’re uncertain about the basics, you should start with that post first and then work through the full series which you can find here. I write this series because I want to draw attention to the importance of backing up your photos. Once again, last month one of my friends had a hard drive failure and lost most of the photos she had taken in 2017 because she didn’t …

How to Correctly Open RAW Files in Luminar from Lightroom Classic

Another quick Luminar tutorial for you guys today, and this time we’re looking at how to open RAW files. Just like Lightroom, Luminar is a fully fledged RAW photo editor but unless you open the RAW files directly into Luminar from your file browser, it can be a little confusing. If you don’t do things quite right you might end up editing a converted TIFF of your image, instead of the original RAW file. This would definitely degrade the final image quality and you wouldn’t be pulling all of the available dynamic range out of the RAW file. Luminar RAW …
